Q: What is teletherapy?
A: The American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) defines telepractice (the act of providing telehealth services) as “the application of telecommunications technology to delivery of professional services at a distance by linking clinician to client, or clinician to clinician, for assessment, intervention, and/or consultation.”
Q: What does research say about teletherapy/telehealth services?
A: Research supports the effectiveness of telehealth compared to traditional therapy and is recognized by the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) as a valid means of service delivery based on a strong body of research. Telehealth has been proven effective by over 40 academic studies.
Q: Is teletherapy effective for all clients?
A: Teletherapy can be used to treat a wide range of speech and language delays and disorders. The speech therapist works closely with parents/ guardians to create the best possible situation for effective sessions.
Q: How does teletherapy compare to traditional therapy?
A: There is little difference between the traditional on-site therapy and online teletherapy. Clients build relationships with their speech therapist based on trust and rapport. A face-to-face connection is made on the screen and therapy is delivered in a similar manner as traditional on- site therapy. The therapist will engage on the screen with the client by using games, stories, tactical items or talk therapy- the same as they would in-person. Should something need to be printed, or a client needs physical help, a parent or guardian may be asked to assist.
Q: What are the benefits of teletherapy?
A: There are so many! Where should we begin? Here are some top reasons teletherapy is a good choice. (1) No travel time – no need to worry about traffic or arriving late to a session when you can receive services from the comfort of your home! (2) Flexibility – teletherapy sessions can be done from anywhere! Just make sure you have a computer and a good connection. (3) Safety – you can ensure safe and healthy habits by not exposing you or your child to infections outside the home; additionally, teletherapy can be helpful over the winter months when road conditions may be dangerous. Your child will still be able to receive services without leaving home!
